Typical Balinese Foods that must be Tasted When Visiting Bali – Bali Island is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Asia. Its beauty has been popular among tourists and traveler from all over the world.

It seems less complete to visit without tasting Balinese cuisine. Balinese culinary has its own charm for the foodies because the foods are always cooked with strong and spicy spices. Here are seven unique and tasty Balinese cuisines that must be tasted when visiting Bali.

The Most Recommended Balinese Cuisine

1. Bubur Mengguh

Bubur means porride. It is a typical porridge from Buleleng (North Bali) usually served in traditional ceremony. Bubur mengguh is made of rice.

It is mixed with coconut milk and served with vegetables, seasoned shredded chicken and thick chicken broth. Its taste is very complete, like a combination between sweet, spicy, and savory.

2. Ayam Betutu (Chicken Betutu)

Ayam Betutu BaliAyam betutu is Balinese culinary icon. It is really recommended for spicy food enthusiasts. So, if you love spicy food, get ready to fall in love with ayam betutu that is full of spicy spices.

This food is really unique since the tummy of the chicken is filled with spices then it is wrapped with banana tree leaf and grilled in coals for 24 hours to get tender texture, authentic spicy taste and savory taste.

It’s usually served with rice, fried peanut, urap (mixture of boiled vegetable with grated coconut) sate lilit (satay lilit), and sambal matah.

Satay lilit or “sate lilit” is made from ground fish that is wrapped with flour, grated coconut, and typical Balinese spices. The original form of sate lilit is made by twisting the ground fish on lemongrass stalk.

It tastes unique, sweet, spicy and savory, with the aroma of lemongrass stalks. Besides delicious, sate lilit is healthy because of its low fat content. It’s usually serve with another Balinese culinary, including ayam betutu, and nasi ayam campur.

4. Tum Ayam (Wrapped Chicken)

Tum ayam means wrapped chicken. This yummy food is made from steamed chopped chicken and wrapped with banana tree leaf.

Before it is steamed, it has been mixed with lots of spices that make this food tasty and special. It is yummy over rice, porridge, and sandwich.

There’s another variant of tum ayam, that using pieces of tofu as an additional ingredient. Sometimes, you can also find tum yam when visiting Lombok.

5. Nasi Ayam Campur (Balinese Mixed Chicken Rice)

This dish provides you various Balinese cuisines served in one portion. Balinese mixed chicken rice, or local people call it as “Nasi Ayam Bali” is commonly made from rice, satay, satay lilit, fried peanuts, veggies, tum ayam, chicken betutu, egg, shrimp with Balinese sauce, and raw sambal. Balinese mixed chicken rice is really tasty.

6. Rujak Kuah Pindang (Balinese Rujak)

Rujak means the mixture of fruit pieces with sauce. What makes it unique is the sauce. It is different with common rujak that is usually served with chili and vinegar sauce.

Balinese rujak is served with “fishy sauce” (kuah pindang), and local people call it as “rujak kuah pindang”. The sauce is made from stewed sea fish heads. Maybe it looks weird. But in fact, many tourists are curious to taste this unique cuisine.

7. Lawar Kuwir

Lawar kuwir (kuwir means duck) is made of ground meat and mixed vegetables and spiced up with a lot of Balinese seasonings.

The original lawar is usually using pork. However, lawar kuwir is using duck instead of pork. There’s also another variants of lawar that use beef, chicken, and duck meat.
